Midget 16U Wins Presidents Day Tournament
|
Bowie, MD – The Pottstown Penguins Midget 16U Ice Hockey team traveled to Bowie Maryland to participate in the Bowie Invitational President’s Day Tournament. The tournament started out well for the Penguins in their first game against the Southern Maryland Sabres. The Penguins took an early lead of 2-1 on two goals by Cole Bernstiel with assists by Joe Knoble and Griff Drury. However, the Sabres came back and took a late second period lead, 3-2. The Penguins responded with three unanswered goals late in the game, two by Sean Lynch and a third goal by Cole Bernstiel for a hat trick with assists from Adam Pearson, Griff Drury and the hot handed Cole Bernstiel for a 5-3 victory. The defense and goalie Ray Stein had an excellent game allowing only 15 shots.
 |
In the second game the Penguins faced the host team the Bowie Bruins. The Penguins were off their mark committing 7 penalties and giving up 3 power play goals. A short handed goal by Sean lynch and a goal by Dan Delaney had the Penguins ahead briefly in the early part of the second period but the Bruins answered back and took a 4-2 victory.
In the third game the Penguins faced a “must win” situation to make the championship round and faced a difficult opponent in the Loudon County Chaos. The Chaos had won the MLK tournament a few weeks earlier. The Penguins started fast and furious with only 48 tic’s off the clock on a goal by Bryce Keene which followed excellent passing and puck movement from Steve DiPietro and Sean Lynch. The Penguins piled it on with six more goals, scored by, Dan Delaney, Cole Bernstiel, Steve DiPietro and a hat trick from Sean Lynch. Assists were posted by Lynch, DiPietro, Griff Drury, Nick Dispenziere and Adam Pearson. The Penguins came away with a 7-3 victory with the Chaos scoring late in the game. The victory enabled the Penguins to make the championship game.
In the Championship game the Penguins face the Bowie Bruins for the second time in the tournament. The Bruins struck first getting a goal in the first minute of play. The Penguins quickly tied the score on a goal by Steve DiPietro with assists by Joe Knoble and Cory Sottanella. The Bruins went ahead 2-1 in the middle of the first period. Griff Drury found the net less than two minutes later with assists by Dan Delaney and Cole Bernstiel to tie the score at 2-2. A defensive physical game continued thru the remainder of the first period and half way into the second period when the Bruins scored at 6:07 remaining in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Bryce Keene answered back in less than a minute to tie the score at 3-3 with assists from DiPietro and Sean Lynch. The defensive struggle continued, with the Penguins defense lead by Nick Dispenziere and Joe Knoble and great support from Sean Fulmer, Ryan Cupo and Adam Pearson kept the Bruins out of the net for the remainder of the game. Drury scored his second goal of the game with assist by Delaney with 5:07 left in the third to seal the victory for the Penguins. Nick Lance had a great game in net blanking the Bruins for the final period and half. |

Players from the Penguin Squirt/Mite hockey team, as well as siblings and parents volunteered their time during this holiday season to assist the Salvation Army with preparation of food packages for distribution to those families in need.
With 26 helpers at the Pottstown location the Penguin families were able to package 450 boxes which were filled with a complete dinner for the families in need. According to the coordinator, this outstanding effort enabled the Corps with preparing the packages "days" ahead of schedule.
The true meaning of "giving back to the community" was definitely experienced by all who participated.
Both children and adults enjoyed the occasion so much that they are already looking forward to the next activity where they can help those in need. |

Pottstown Mercury - Sunday, October 26, 2008
|
Pottstown Penguins take four: The Pottstown Penguins and the Squirt (9-10-year-olds) opened the season with a bang, starting with a 6-0 win over Wissahickon. Matt Snader was phenomenal in goal stopping all 17 shots that he faced. The offense was powered by Bransen Mackey, who scored four goals, while Josh Spencer and Jared Cossel each tallied one. The Penguins followed up with another decisive 10-2 win against the Haverford Hawks, solidified by goals from JT Gresh, as well as hat tricks from Alec Brisbois and Bransen Mackey.
The Penguins continued their winning ways with an 8-3 win over the York Devils. Leading the way for the Penguins was Alec Krause with a hat trick and an assist. Jared Cossel scored two goals and had an assist.
Pottstown followed up the win with a 5-3 victory over the Grundy Senators at the Grundy Rec Center in Bristol. Krause, Cossel, and Mackey continued to find the back of the net, but it was the stellar defensive play of Riley Jordan, Ben Kerchner, and Adam Kaercher that helped the Penguins achieve a No. 3 ranking in the Tier II Squirt B Division by National Hockey Rankings.com. |
